A GROSS MARGIN COMPARISON OF RETURNS TO NEMATICIDE TREATMENT IN CONTINUOUS AND ROTATION TRITICALE-SOYBEAN PRODUCTION AgEcon
Stark, C. Robert, Jr.; Dowler, C.C.; Johnson, A.W.; Baker, S.H..
A study of irrigated strip-till soybean production compared gross margins over nematicide expense for a continuous triticale-soybean system versus a two-year rotation system alternating triticale-soybean with triticale-cotton. Half of the replicated plots under each system received nematicide treatment. Gross margins were calculated using recorded yields and Georgia average market prices by marketing years. Mean gross margins for untreated plots were not significantly different between crop-sequence systems. Within each system, however, mean gross margins were significantly higher for plots not receiving nematicide treatment versus treated plots, even when treated plots produced greater yields.

Caenorhabditis elegans as an indicator of toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis strains to Meloidogyne incognita race 3 Ciência Rural
Montalvão,Sandro Coelho Linhares; Castro,Marcelo Tavares de; Soares,Carlos Marcelo Silveira; Blum,Luiz Eduardo Bassay; Monnerat,Rose Gomes.
ABSTRACT: The cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum) is affected by several diseases of economic importance, among them root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita races 3 and 4). Methods to control this disease include the application of nematicides, solarization, deep plowing, crop rotation and use of antagonistic microorganisms. Among species of Bacillus, there are strains that act as bioregulators and antagonists of several pathogens. Tests to identify these strains are hampered by the difficulty of obtaining large populations of the pathogen and by the time of execution of the in vivo tests that should be conducted for about 90 days. The objective of this research was to compare the toxicity of B. thuringiensis strains to two nematodes, M. incognita and...

Comparison of the damaging effects of Meloidogyne incognita on a resistant and susceptible cultivar of cucumber Bragantia
Mukhtar,Tariq; Kayani,Muhammad Zameer.
ABSTRACT In the present study, the damaging effects of six inoculum densities of Meloidogyne incognita were compared on a resistant (Long Green) and a highly susceptible (Mirage) cultivar of cucumber. All the inoculum densities of M. incognita resulted in significant reductions in growth and yield variables of both the cultivars over their controls. The reductions in resistant cultivar were significantly lower as compared to the highly susceptible cultivar at all inoculum levels. The highest inoculum level caused the maximum reductions in growth and yield variables while the lowest inoculum level resulted in the minimum reductions. The reductions in growth and yield variables increased with an increase in the inoculum density showing a positive...

Control of Meloidogyne paranaensis mediated by silicon Scientia Agricola
Bicalho,Anderson Cascione Gripp; Silva,Santino Aleandro da; Machado,Andressa Cristina Zamboni.
ABSTRACT: The potential of silicon (Si) to control nematodes is often reported in association with the resistance induction mechanism. The objective of this work was to evaluate the hypothesis of resistance induction in plants against nematodes through the application of Si. In vitro experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of Si and potassium chloride (KCl) on the hatching and mortality of Meloidogyne paranaensis juveniles. For the purpose of a greenhouse experiment, tomato plants were used as a model for bifurcated roots, using the respective control treatments, KCl and distilled water. Ten days after treatment, 2,000 eggs of M. paranaensis were inoculated. At 55 days post-inoculation, the reproduction factor and number of nematodes per gram...

Dosages of bokashi in the control of Meloidogyne javanica in lettuce, in greenhouse Horticultura Brasileira
Ferreira,Júlio CA; Hernandes,Isabela; Brito,Olívia DC; Cardoso,Michelly R; Dias-Arieira,Claudia R.
ABSTRACT Root-knot nematodes are among the major phytosanitary problems on vegetables, and the use of organic matter can be a viable method to control this parasite. Thus, in the present study we aimed to investigate in a greenhouse the use of bokashi doses (organic compound produced by fermentation of grain mixtures) in the control of Meloidogyne javanica in lettuce. Substrate infestation was carried out using tomato seedlings transplanted into pots containing 2 kg of autoclaved soil and inoculated with 2000 eggs and eventual second stage juveniles. After 60 days, the aerial part of the tomato plant was discarded and lettuce seedlings of cv. Vera were transplanted, adding bokashi at doses of 0, 5, 10 and 20 g/pot. One second treatment consisted in the...

Effects of silicon on the penetration and reproduction events of Meloidogyne exigua on coffee roots Bragantia
Silva,Rodrigo Vieira; Oliveira,Rosângela D’Arc de Lima; Ferreira,Patrícia da Silva; Castro,Douglas Barbosa; Rodrigues,Fabrício Ávila.
Considering that the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne exigua has caused great yield losses to coffee production in Brazil, this study aimed to determine whether the penetration and the reproduction events of this nematode on the roots of plants from two coffee cultivars with different levels of basal resistance to this nematode could be affected by silicon (Si). Coffee plants from the cultivars Catuaí and IAPAR 59, which are susceptible and resistant, respectively, to M. exigua, were grown in pots containing Si-deficient soil that was amended with either calcium silicate (+Si) or calcium carbonate (–Si). The Si concentration on the root tissue significantly increased by 159 and 97% for the +Si plants from the cultivars Catuaí and IAPAR 59, respectively,...

Nematicidal activity of leaf extracts from Lantana camara L. against Meloidogyne incognita (kofoid and white) chitwood and its use to manage roots infection of Solanum melongena L. BABT
Ahmad,Faheem; Rather,Mohmad Azhar; Siddiqui,Mansoor Ahmad.
Various concentrations of aqueous leaf extract of Lantana camara were assessed in vitro conditions against second stage juveniles (J2) of Meloidogyne incognita. The standard concentration 'S' of leaf extract was found to be highly nematostatic, where nematodes were completely paralyzed after 12 h and after 48 h of exposure, 96% of juveniles were killed at same concentration. However, the mortality of juveniles was 75% in S/2 dilution at 48 h. The degree of effectiveness and dilutions of extract were directly proportional. The percentage of paralyzed juveniles was decreased, when J2 transferred in distilled water after 48 h incubation in standard aqueous leaf extract. Addition of freeze-dried aqueous extract to sterile sandy substrate at S/2 dilution...

LORDELLO,RUBENS RODOLFO ALBUQUERQUE; LORDELLO,ANA INES LUCENA; GODOY,IGNÁCIO JOSÉ DE.
The root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica (Treub, 1885) Chitwood, 1949, was identified in roots, nodules and shells of peanut plants (Arachis hypogaea L.), cv. Florman-INTA, collected from a field in Menno colony, Chaco Central region of Paraguay. Infected plants were observed in patches, showing wilting and drying of vegetative parts. Peanut had been grown ininterruptly for many years in the same area and patches had already been observed in the preceding year in cv. Starr. Nematodes collected from roots in this field reproduced on tomato cultivar rutgers and peanut cultivar florunner and produced egg-masses on roots, nodules and shells of cultivar Florman. This is the first report on M. javanica parasiting peanut in Paraguay.

Purification and identification of metabolites produced by Bacillus cereus and B. subtilis active against Meloidogyne exigua, and their in silico interaction with a putative phosphoribosyltransferase fromM. incognita Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,DENILSON F.; SANTOS JÚNIOR,HELVÉCIO M. DOS; NUNES,ALEXANDRO S.; CAMPOS,VICENTE P.; PINHO,RENATA S.C. DE; GAJO,GIOVANNA C..
To contribute to the development of products to controlMeloidogyne exigua, the bacteria Bacillus cereus and B. subtilis were cultivated in liquid medium to produce metabolites active against this plant-parasitic nematode. Fractionation of the crude dichloromethane extracts obtained from the cultures afforded uracil, 9H-purine and dihydrouracil. All compounds were active against M. exigua, the latter being the most efficient. This substance presented a LC50 of 204 µg/mL against the nematode, while a LC50 of 260 µg/mL was observed for the commercial nematicide carbofuran. A search for protein-ligand complexes in which the ligands were structurally similar to dihydrouracil resulted in the selection of phosphoribosyltransferases, the sequences of which were...

Quantification of the damage caused by Meloidogyne enterolobii in okra PAB
Silva,Edgard Henrique Costa; Soares,Renato Silva; Borges,Heloísa Oliveira; Franco,Carolina Andrade; Braz,Leila Trevisan; Soares,Pedro Luiz Martins.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the damage caused by Meloidogyne enterolobii in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) and to verify the reliability of the reproduction factor as a suitable measure for selecting resistant okra genotypes. Increasing populations of M. enterolobii - 0, 500, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, and 7,000 eggs and second-stage juveniles (J2) per plant, - were evaluated, in a completely randomized design. The pathogen showed a parasitism pattern similar to that of M. incognita, causing a significant decrease in morphological and agronomic traits. The pathogen reproduction factor should be used in the selection of okra genotypes for tolerance to M. enterolobii, in populations above 3,000 eggs or J2.
